We are not followers, we’ll never be. We carve a new way, we thrive to innovate.”

1.) What attracted you personally to inov-8?
I have a passion for the outdoors and running and wanted to work for a global brand. inov-8 sells in over 60 countries. Inov-8’s brand promise is so clear, it’s in the name, to innovate. I read a quote from Wayne Edy, our founder “We are not followers, we never will be. We carve a new way, we thrive to innovate.” That’s why I wanted to work for inov-8.

2.) Catchword  „back to the roots“ – how important is it for a brand to stay in touch with it’s roots and what in particular does that mean for inov-8?
It very important to stay connected to your roots. It’s what makes brands special. The challenge is to nurture the roots and grow. And ensure you are always pushing the brand forward.  Our roots come from the belief that the athlete’s interaction with the environment is the most important factor when designing sportswear. We believe the product should work with the body and maximise exteroception. This allows the body to react fast to the environment, meaning the athlete is in control and can push their limits. And it means our products are always light, fast and agile. We also believe that GRIP is the most important feature for off-road running. And we develop different grip profiles for different terrain. And we regularly receive reviews showing that we have the best grip.
As a team we live and breathe our brand. Being based in The English Lake District, a world heritage site, we daily go out running. Everybody runs, whether they are a trail runner, a fell runner or a park runner. This means our products are tested to destruction in the varied terrain of the lakes – from killer downhills to challenging assents. The weather is constantly changing; we live in the perfect testing ground. Meaning our brand is forged for the fells and mountains of The English Lakes.

3.) Challenge ‘credibility’: How can the authenticity and philosophy of inov-8 work globally?
First, we have people that are passionate about the outdoors and fitness. Whenever retailers, runners, and CrossFit athletes visit inov-8, they realise what a special brand we are. Our people spread our message globally. Because they fully believe in our brand. Second, our product is light, agile and fast. It’s very different to wear. Earlier this year, I was at a trail event in Austria. We had so many people trying out product and loving how it feels – one runner was a little skeptical, we got him to try our product. He loved the feel. And decided to run the Ultra in our Rocklite 290 and came 11th. He came back and told me how much he loved our shoes. Finally, our brand promise is to innovate. We will deliver meaningful innovations for off-road running and for the sport of CrossFit. Innovations that work for the sports athlete will transcend boundaries and work globally.

4.) In the home of inov-8 the passion of brand ambassador is very noticeable. Can this passion from ambassadors reach a global audience?
Yes. We already have ambassadors from around the world. Because our brand has such a clear meaning and direction, athletes find our brand and love what we are doing. They love our product. And then when they meet the people behind the brand, they realise what a genuine brand we are. I’ve been amazed with what a small group of people can achieve. And how they can take the message globally. That’s because they are so passionate about what we do as a brand.

5.) What importance does the brick and mortar retailer play in inov-8’s future?
Very important – we spend a lot of training people that work in bricks and mortar. We take them on runs, we bring them to The Lakes so they can test our product and get behind our brand – live the brand with us. I believe that strong independent sports stores will thrive. Sports people love to go to a location where they can talk about their sport, they can hear about new products, they can share their experiences.

6.) What potential do you see for inov-8 in it’s strongest segment, i.e. shoes?
We are already growing at a double digit rate. So I see enormous potential. The market is moving in our direction. You know longer have to choose between lightweight and cushioning, you can have both – that’s what we provide, light and agile products that enhance your bodies sensitivities to the environment.

7.) What in your opinion is the biggest challenge inov-8 faces in positioning itself on a global market?
To continually deliver meaningful innovations and live by Wayne’s quote – „We are not followers, we’ll never be. We carve a new way, we thrive to innovate.”
