SizeMyBike computes the optimal geometry of your road or mountain bike's frame to perfectly match your morphology. Six body measurements (height, inseam, sternum, arm length, foot length, and shoulder width) allow for an accurate computation of the best geometry. This information is useful in choosing the right frame size and obtaining the best fit for your bike. Ride fast and comfortably thanks to SizeMyBike!
The SizeMyBike project was born not on a bicycle but on a boat in July 2009. Nicolas Canouet had accumulated knowledge in the field of bike fitting. “My blood made some turns, my brain sent a relatively strong signal, then the wind roses…” remembers François-Régis Chalaoux. François-Régis imagined a tool for bike fitting to be run on a mobile phone. After having evaluated the various platforms, our choice was made on the iPhone. It is certainly the smartphone of its generation with the most advanced ergonomics functionalities. Moreover, it is a true pleasure to program native applications on this machine. All is provided to support the re-use of a monstrous framework of ingeniousness and generosity. The two accomplices then put themselves at work. Nicolas, PhD in Mathematics, works in the field of the scientific computation. He thus realized the computation model. François-Régis, PhD in Biology, is a researcher in a pharmaceutical company, as for him rather concentrated on the software aspect, which was a pleasing task for this fan and Mac expert of the first hour. The two tasks are of course not disjoined. Solidarity thus prevailed and made it possible to develop SizeMyBike in less than 6 months.
SizeMyBike is thus available on the App Store since the end of February. The application tries to bring a solution to people who pose the following questions: how to choose the size of my bicycle, how to adjust my bicycle? The answer is not simple. It is indeed a question of minimizing a cost function integrating 3 contradictory objectives: aerodynamics, power and comfort. These three points are fundamental in the quest for performance. A thorough bibliography search of the question was carried out. Many work were studied. If one had to quote only one of them, the choice would be made on the publication of N. Belluye and M. Cid: “Biomechanical Approach of modern cycling”. The methodology generally used in these works consists in developing an instrumental protocol to measure a developed or transmitted power, a frontal surface, oxygen uptake, a metabolic cost or a trauma. The researchers then vary the riders position on the bicycle and quantify the impact on the parameters which they chose to study. An optimal model is then calculated by using statistical methods. Various work was taken into account by the developers of SizeMyBike to create a convergent model. This model makes it possible to calculate the optimal geometry of your bicycle according to your morphology. Six body measurements (size, inseam, sternum, length of the arms, length of the feet and width of the shoulders) are used for this calculation.
This project is dedicated to cyclists. The developers thus hope that their work will be useful for a large number of them. The goal is to help beginners to choose the right frame size and to help more senior cyclists to improve their position on the bicycle. SizeMyBike is also a living project: the application has a vocation to evolve. Several subjects are under investigation: cycling cadence, training notebook , training method , nutrition,…
The challenge is now to give to SizeMyBike a visibility among the 170000 other applications available! If we are successful, SizeMyBike may have contributed to Apple crossing the bar of 4 billion applications downloaded from the App Store…
